BED ON BRICKS
Bed on Bricks was formed in February 2003 by ex-Sons of Trout frontman Mike Hardy. Joining him was Dave van der Linden on guitar, Tim Rankin on drums, and Schalk van der Merwe on bass. The initial idea was to get together this group of experienced and talented musicians to form a “supergroup” as such, defined by each of these artists’ specific musical styles. The result? A funky eclectic mix of Cape Townianisms that defy easy categorisation, but more importantly, impresses all. The band has been working hard the last three years, with constant tours all over South Africa (including slots at most of the major music festivals, like Oppikoppi, Up the Creek, Mr Price Pro, and many, many more), releasing three full-length albums (Humanarium, If you see Kay, and the live acoustic album, Takeaways), making two music video’s (for “Funny” – which was played on high rotation on MK89, and “Fuck on the Radio”), and a determined drive to be better. This has resulted in a reputation as one of the truly hottest live acts in the country today (the band was nominated for a Kanna award at the 2004 KKNK for best live performance in rock, pop or jazz). With fanatical fans (many of whom constitute some of South Africa’s top musicians), the Bricks are fast becoming a dominant force on the South African musical landscape. Go see them live and you’ll understand why.!
